Roma goalkeeper Wojciech Szczęsny admits the derby against Lazio is a “special game”.

The Polish international joined the Giallorossi on loan from Arsenal in the summer, and will face his second Derby della Capitale on Sunday.

“You can feel that it’s a special game,” Szczęsny said on Roma Radio.

“We’re coming into it in the best possible condition, and there’s only one thing in our head: winning.

“For the fans it’s worth more than three points, but for us there are three points at stake, and we have to make sure the fans are happy by getting all three.”

Szczęsny was then asked about the differences between Arsenal and Roma, as well as his future.

“If we’re talking about the technical level of their football then they’re both similar, both have phenomenal players.

“If we’re talking about the respective Leagues, it’s difficult to make comparisons. The English one is more physical, the Italian more technical.

“We’ll see how things go next year, this year the season was ok, and I hope next year both teams are able to win the League.

“Will I stay at Roma? For me, football always comes first. I have the confidence of everyone here.

“When you have the trust of your teammates, the Coach and the fans, as well as playing every Sunday, then that can only be for the best.

“Obviously it’s not just thanks to me, but everyone who has helped me.”

Despite the positives, the goalkeeper revealed that Coach Luciano Spalletti once asked if he needed glasses!

“It was at Empoli,” Szczęsny recalled.

“[Edin] Dzeko came on, and when I was kicking it out from the back Spalletti was on the touchline shouting ‘Dzeko! Dzeko!’ at me.

“I missed with one of the punts forward and the Coach shouted at me. We won, but I was so afraid to see him in the dressing room!

“The Coach doesn’t accept mistakes on the pitch, off the pitch or in the dressing room. That’s what makes him special and allowed us to change the inertia of our season.

“It allowed us to win eight consecutive games and draw against Inter. He’s a perfectionist who is making a difference.”
