Roma’s Kevin Strootman reveals he ‘couldn’t sleep’ before facing Genoa, his first start since January 2015.

The Dutch midfielder has been sidelined due to a knee injury for a long time, but completed 90 minutes in the 3-2 win over the Grifone.

“During the day I thought about going out on the pitch a lot, the night before I didn’t sleep well,” Strootman told Roma Radio.

“I was thinking about my legs, my knee, and the match because I’ve been out for so long. I was nervous, even for the first five minutes that I was on the pitch. Then I thought about winning the game.

“Even in training my teammates wouldn’t go in hard on me and I said that if they didn’t I would never be ready for the match. The important thing is that the legs worked well and we got the three points.

“What did I think when Genoa went 2-1 up? We had the feeling we could win. We played well in the first half as well, creating many goalscoring opportunities. Also after it was 2-1 we took the ball and tried to get the second and third goals.

“For us and the fans it was a great match. We conceded two goals and that’s not possible at this level, but we won.

“Our objective is to beat Chievo and it won’t be easy, but we have to take the three points and then see Napoli’s match.”
