“I am sorry with the way this game went, but I have to thank the players for giving their all and the fans for their applause at the final whistle,” the Coach told Sky Sport Italia.

“This defeat feels like a final verdict, but until we are mathematically condemned to relegation, we have to keep trying.

“It is a very heavy loss. After a tight first half from both sides, after the break we took control, but they scored during our best period of the game.

“From the bench I thought Gilardino’s goal was offside and looking at the footage I agree with my initial impression.

“After that we continued pushing to get back on level terms, but Stefano Sorrentino was great in goal. Palermo scored their second when we had four strikers on the pitch.

“If there was a team that deserved to win this game, it was us.”
