Atalanta secured their Serie A safety with a 1-0 win over Chievo and Coach Edy Reja “didn’t expect us to struggle this much.”

Marco Borriello netted the decisive goal at the Stadio Azzurri d’Italia this afternoon.

“I am satisfied, as this was the objective, but considering how we started the campaign we didn’t expect to struggle this much,” the Coach told Sky Sport Italia.

“There were some big changes in January and we took a while to get everyone up to date with the new tactics, but for the last few weeks we’ve been on better form.”

Reja was sent off for dissent in the final stages of the game.

“I pointed a finger at Hetemaj, as he had a series of fouls. Which finger? The index finger…”

“The President will evaluate my work and we’ll get together at the end of the season to decide if we should go forward together.

“In all honesty, I thought we could do something more than just achieve safety, but let’s not complain.

“Borriello has lost 8kg since he arrived here. He has worked so hard and well in training. He does remarkably well in matches, controlling his output so he can be more effective as the game goes on.

“When the ball is at his feet, you can’t take it away. If he is in good physical shape, he’s an excellent player. I think he’s got back to the level he was at during his Genoa career.

"The trouble is football is optional for him, as he has other pleasures in life!"
