And speaking post-match, the San Siro boss paid tribute to Inter’s opponents at the San Siro.

“We faced a team who were at our level,” Spalletti told reporters. “They played their own game and tried to win.

“It was close, we made more mistakes than usual. At some points of the game we weren’t good in our decision making.

“The team knows how to react and maintain its balance. We made a final push, in which something more could have arrived.

“We got the ball in the area many times but today we didn’t manage to capitalise.”

The former Roma Coach was asked about the performance of star forward Mauro Icardi, who failed to find the net today.

“He did what he had to do today. When it was needed, he gave a hand to the team and the team created chances for him to score.

“It is an important point for our League position. We are always looking for the maximum and at times we please ourselves.”

Borja Valero and Danilo D’Ambrosio wasted the chance to win the match in a frantic finale at the San Siro, with Spalletti blaming a loss of cool at the critical moment.

“We were under the San Siro effect, the cry of the home fans.

“The team showed an important reaction and the crowd shouted and participated strongly.

“At that point we were looking to apply the knockout blow but we lost a bit of organisation. These things happen.”
