Luciano Spalletti is reportedly in the eyes of Napoli President Aurelio De Laurentiis as a candidate to succeed Rafa Benitez.

Benitez continues to face speculation over his future at the San Paolo, having so far failed to commit beyond his contract which expires in the summer.

Subsequently speculation has turned to the club’s intentions should the Spaniard depart, and the latest indications are that Zenit St Petersburg’s out-of-action boss is in contention.

Former Roma Coach Spalletti, sacked last year by Zenit but left on contract, will be available at that deal’s expiry in June.

This, combined with the belief that his current salary of €3m yearly is less than Benitez’s reputed €3.5m earnings and that De Laurentiis apparently sees him as fitting the ‘right profile’, makes him a credible candidate, according to Calciomercato.it.

Reports suggest that Spalletti and De Laurentiis have not spoken in person yet, but that the Tuscan Coach has discussed Napoli with intermediaries close to the cinema mogul.
