“Francesco Totti is in the squad, while El Shaarawy and Manolas are not called up, as they are undergoing treatment for muscular problems,” said the Coach in his Press conference.

“It is a dangerous game, certainly. At times when you do easy things they become difficult if treated the wrong way. We are coming off a match that took a great deal out of us, as (the 4-1 victory over Viktoria Plzen) was decisive for qualification.”

Yet last week the Giallorossi threw away a lead to lose with Atalanta, so why do they keep having these dips in concentration?

“The way I see it, this is purely my responsibility. The Coach has an important role and everyone must believe they can make a difference.

“What happened here might seem a concern from the outside, but I certainly don’t regret coming back to Roma and would do it again.”

Kevin Strootman has fully recovered from almost two years out injured, but has been off form in the last few games.

“There are moments when, after a sparkling start, you go into a plateau. Every now and then he shows that he needs to improve when anticipating the ball and speeding up his through process.

“If Antonio Rudiger has a slow thought process, then the only one behind him is the goalkeeper. His knee is fine, he recovers well after a tiring match.

“I don’t think we can train the team to be more determined. It’s up to us to motivate, but perhaps by not talking about it, we’ll do better. In some situations if you think too much about how things can go wrong, they will go wrong.

“I believe character is staying quiet when you have a lot to say. Character is taking a kick when you should react, but staying quiet because it is to your advantage. You don’t need a tough tackle to prove you’ve got character, because a foul is not to your advantage.”
