Luciano Spalletti says his “deep affection” for Roma was his reason for returning to the club.

The Coach replaced Rudi Garcia on the Olimpico bench in January, and has since overseen seven Serie A wins in a row.

“I was motivated by the beauty of this place, this squad, these colours and this club,” Spalletti explained to UEFA’s official website.

“Then there’s a deep affection for all of those things, so it was an easy choice for me.

“What’s important is knowing the surroundings, what Roma is, seeing all these people who – as I said before – have a deep affection for these colours, who have a deep love for this team.

“So you know you can make a contribution to those hearts, these people who believe in this team and are willing to fight and win with this team.

“My plans for the team? I’d got the idea that it was a good squad looking at it from the outside, and when I came in I tried to re-convince the players of their quality, because it was obvious they had it.

“I think we’ve taken important steps forward, but there’s still a long way to go. We’re going toward a certain mindset and mental strength within the team.

“It takes time, there are repetitive instructions you have to give to your players because they have to learn that this is the most important thing in their lives. Everything else comes after.

“Your family is your football team and the fans, the result is the first objective you have to aim for every day, which of course means depriving yourself of some other things.”
