Spain have called up Jose Callejon for next week’s 2018 World Cup qualifier against Italy – the Napoli winger’s first inclusion in almost two years.

Callejon is one of five new faces in the Spain squad as he joins Andres Iniesta, Sergio Rico, Nacho Fernandez and Isco in replacing Marco Asensio, Marc Bartra, Cesar Azpilicueta, Juan Mata and Paco Alcacer, plus Napoli teammate Pepe Reina.

“He was one of those we were following, and we think he can give us something different,” Coach Julen Lopetegui said at a Press conference.

“At the moment, he’s doing very well for a great team like Napoli and in a League of great demand like Serie A.”

The 28-year-old was last picked up La Roja in November 2014, when he appeared against Belarus and Germany, but he has been rewarded the chance to add to his two caps after starting the season with five goals and three assists.

Spain face Italy in Turin on October 6 before travelling to Albania three days later.
