Spain boss Vicente Del Bosque says drawing 2-2 with Croatia on Monday in order to eliminate Italy is not in their plans.

The Azzurri will need to beat the Republic of Ireland in their last game to have a chance of qualification, but even that won’t be enough if a high score draw is the result between Spain and Croatia.

“We will prepare to win the game,” he stated after the 4-0 win over Giovanni Trapattoni’s side. “We are sportsmen. Both Spain and Croatia will go out with the intention of winning.

“I have not made any calculations and we should only be interested in winning the game against Croatia.”

Italy are concerned given that their current predicament is similar to how their 2004 European Championship ended.

The Azzurri beat Bulgaria in the final group game, but they were still sent home after Sweden and Denmark drew 2-2. All three teams ended the section on five points.
