The Italian Government has collapsed and a new coalition is being put together, which means many Ministers will no longer be in their current roles.

Among them, Spadafora is stepping down as Minister for Sport and Youth, ending a tempestuous and often controversial tenure, not just because of the pandemic.

In a lengthy Instagram post, Spadafora made a confession that raised further question marks over why he was chosen for the role in the first place.

“When I was sworn in as Minister for Youth Policies and Sport, we were in another era, a completely different moment in time to where we are now,” wrote Spadafora.

“I had followed matters regarding infancy and young people, that was always at the centre of my public service. However, I did not know anything about the world of sport, so I approached it with curiosity, respect and attention.

“The first few months were exhilarating, but then the pandemic erupted and we have worked so hard to give the necessary support to the world of sport, naturally within limits, but doing all we could.”
