“I am honest and direct with everyone, the team got the message,” said Sousa in a Press conference.

This is their first game since Wednesday’s shock Coppa Italia exit at the hands of Carpi.

“Defeat can happen, but what really disappointed me was the lack of a winning mentality. We did not play with our usual identity and that’s a problem.

“My colleagues in Serie A are all very smart and know how to shut us down now. We are trying to find a few tactical variations, although that will take time.

“The game with Chievo is a dangerous one, we are aware that we’re going into this match after some negative results. I am also aware of how strong my squad is and how well they’ll be able to answer those doubts on the field.

“Chievo are in good shape and know each other well. They defend as a unit and spaces are limited. We must alternate our passing game with individual moments of initiative to break through.”

Fiorentina had their Christmas dinner last night and patron Andrea Della Valle promised “gifts” in the January transfer window.

“The first gift must be the three points tomorrow. We have not made big investments, but have still been able to have a great campaign. This raised everyone’s expectations. To do more we need everyone to give more.

“I have faith. The Della Valle family have always had success in their businesses and the patron will do his best to improve the squad.”

While some are coming in, others like Rossi could be sent out on loan to get more playing time.

“My first thought is for the player. I tend to put the team in front of everything else, but I also think of how to make each individual happy. If this option is in his mind, then we’ll face the situation.

“As long as a player is with us, it’s up to us to make him as happy as possible. Besides, when it comes to Pepito, the decision isn’t only down to me.

“It’s only normal that some players need more time, because I have been unable to change the mentality of some players and that is my responsibility. We must put everyone in a condition to give their best.”

Manuel Pasqual and Jakub Blaszczykowski are on the treatment table and will not take on Chievo.
