Paulo Sousa feels Fiorentina “deserved” the 2-1 victory at Pescara, but “we need to work on belief and shots from distance.”

The Viola were trailing for much of the game thanks to Gianluca Caprari springing the offside trap, but turned it around with a Cristian Tello brace.

“The approach was good and our opponents waited for us in a block behind the ball,” the Coach told Mediaset Premium.

“We should’ve controlled the transitions better in the first half, to move the ball around quicker and try combinations. In the second we got closer to the box and tried more crosses. I told the lads to go for one-on-one challenges down the flanks.

“We are closer to Europe now and the players proved that with the right attitude and desire to win, we can be more competitive.

“It was a struggle to win, but the important thing was to get the victory. What we need to work on is belief in ourselves and having more shots from distance when opposition defences clam up, because we’ve got the ideal players to do that.”

Sousa was asked what the future holds for him and Fiorentina.

“It all depends on our present. We will try to win as much as possible and tonight I feel the team deserved the victory.”

Riccardo Saponara was in the stands after his deadline day move from Empoli.

“I am waiting to introduce him. He will slowly understand our team dynamics and has very good technique.”
