“The team is in good shape after a couple of days off,” said the Coach in his Press conference.

They need to recover after crashing out of the Europa League and Coppa Italia, while third place is increasingly difficult following a 4-1 defeat to Roma.

“We do not start a new season now, it’s still the same, but we have so far created expectations that we now want to maintain. We have to focus on winning, which is what we’ve done since the start.

“This is a game in which we can only win. Verona are very physical and can cause a lot of problems on set plays or counter-attacks, while it’s not easy for us to find space between their lines.

“It’ll be crucial tomorrow when we decide whether to take men on or create spaces. They want to stay in Serie A, or at least their individuals perform well to attract interest from other clubs.

“I am sure Luca Toni and Giampaolo Pazzini will be given a warm welcome. Then it’s up to us to make sure they can’t express their full quality.”

The defeat to Roma hit confidence hard among the fans, as it’s expected the attendance will plummet tomorrow.

“The fans always sent us signs of their faith and the team wants to honour them by giving everything without limits. Now we have to let them realise how much we want to make them proud with our attacking football, possession and fighting spirit,” continued Sousa.

“In psychological terms we have improved a lot this season and created expectations. Now we’ve got to maintain this status and remain concentrated.

“I am never sated and none of the great football men are. Just look at Gigi Buffon, he couldn’t have reached the unbeaten record if he had rested on his laurels.

“You must always build on the individual attitude so the team can target ever greater objectives. We must always aim to improve.”

Sousa confirmed Borja Valero and Matias Vecino are available after injury, while he’s working on ways to help Nikola Kalinic rediscover his scoring touch.

“Playing with more strikers does not necessarily create more chances or goals. It’s all about balance. Players who push forward like Mauro Zarate and Cristian Tello must learn to do better when transitioning into defence after we lose possession.”
