“When I was young it was nice to be compared to Buffon,” Sirigu reflected in an interview with L’Equipe.

“I was also disappointed when later maybe someone else was compared to him instead of me. But since then at least 20-25 goalkeepers have been compared to Buffon.

“By then I was sick of it. Buffon is still Buffon.

“In my early 20s I’d go on to the field with the desire to prove to everyone that I was like Gigi. With time, however, I realised I had to be myself.

“The important thing is to know that I am who I am, and he is who he is.”
