Diego Simeone revealed that he is often met with requests by supporters of both Inter and Lazio to return to Italy as a coach, a prospect which he confessed he would ‘certainly like’.

The Atletico Madrid coach was in attendance at the Stadio Maradona on Sunday evening to watch his son, Giovanni, be crowned Serie A champion along with the rest of the Napoli squad during the 1-0 victory over Fiorentina

In an interview given to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Simeone told the paper he would enjoy the idea of returning to Serie A as a coach, but also admitted he does not know how much longer he will be able to continue in a managerial position after a 12-year stint with Atletico.

“I don’t know how much longer I will be able to coach, I am 53 years old. Another 5? It is certainly a stressful job. But then I think that a few days of holiday were always enough to make me want to get back on the pitch.

“The grass is like a drug for us. I often meet Inter and Lazio fans who ask me to come back. Who knows? I would certainly like it.”

“I have another year on my contract, we’ll see what happens.”

Inter in particular are on the lookout for a new coach, with Simone Inzaghi expected to leave his post come the end of the 2022-23 season.

Among the other candidates tipped to take over at San Siro are Antonio Conte, Brighton’s Roberto De Zerbi and Bologna’s Thiago Motta.
