“I don’t like to make predictions, but I am certainly curious to see what happens,” Sheva told La Gazzetta dello Sport’s Sportweek magazine.

“Inter are certainly further ahead in the evolution of the team. Antonio Conte arrives with a project, but the foundations were already there, otherwise he wouldn’t have chosen Inter.

“Conte has won everywhere, he has a strong base to build on and the club signed the players he asked for. Inter are the favourites, but everyone knows the derby is a separate entity and anything can happen.

“Marco Giampaolo is working for a big club now and that means different objectives to when he was at Sampdoria. It’ll be a different experience for him, as you never forget your first derby.

“I still remember my debut against Ronaldo, Bobo Vieri, Ivan Zamorano, Javier Zanetti… a super team. It was an incredible match too, as they took the lead with Ronaldo, who then got sent off. I came on during the second half and within a few minutes equalised, then George Weah at the 90th.”

That was one of many legendary nights at San Siro, but the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza could well be torn down, as Inter and Milan want to build a new arena.

“It’s not so much about the construction per se, but the place,” noted Shevchenko.

“If they build a new and more modern stadium there, that’ll be fine. The sensations are tied to that place, San Siro, a piece of history for two clubs. If they leave there, it’ll never be the same.”
