Xherdan Shaqiri is convinced that Inter are superior to Celtic, but admits they underestimated the Scots in the first leg.

The Nerazzurri meet the Glaswegian side at San Siro in the second leg of the Europa League Last 32 tie on Thursday, following a 3-3 draw at Parkhead in the first leg.

“The reality is that we made a big mistake against Celtic, but we won’t do it again in Italy,” Shaqiri told the Daily Record.

“We thought the game was won and perhaps we did not show Celtic the respect they deserve.

“The reality is that we made a big mistake against Celtic, but we won’t do it again in Italy,” Shaqiri told the Daily Record.

“We thought the game was won and perhaps we did not show Celtic the respect they deserve.

“In Italy if we go two, three or even four goals up we stay focused. We will against Celtic, they have shown they are more than capable of scoring goals.

“It was very disappointing to throw away a two-goal lead but the Coach [Roberto Mancini] has stressed to us that 3-3 was not a bad result.

“Teams like Barcelona have lost there [at Celtic Park] in recent seasons – so when you look at the draw maybe it is not so bad. Scoring three away goals is always a big positive.

“Coming from two goals down and scoring such a late goal will have given Celtic confidence.

“It will have given them belief they can get goals against us and I am sure they will arrive in Italy believing they can score.

“We do have respect for Celtic but I still believe what I believed before the first game – and that is that we are technically far superior.

“Playing in front of our fans, they will demand we don’t have lapses in concentration and I still fully expect us to progress to the next round.”
