Sevilla fought back from a goal down to beat Liverpool 3-1 and lift the Europa League trophy for the third year running.

They only entered the competition via the Champions League, finishing third in a group behind Manchester City and Juventus. Sevilla will again qualify for the group phase thanks to this victory.

It means both European tournaments will go to Spain, as the Champions League Final is between Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid.

It was a nervy start for Daniel Carriço, who performed an early goal-line clearance to stop Daniel Sturridge scoring with a header, then risked a penalty by blocking Firmino’s chip with his hand.

A spectacular Kevin Gameiro overhead kick from a corner flashed inches wide, but the Reds took a deserved lead with Sturridge’s stunning curler off the outside of the left boot in at the right post.

Dejan Lovren had the ball in the net again moments later with a header, but it was disallowed because offside Sturridge was interfering with play.

Sevilla had the perfect start to the second half, as within 17 seconds Gameiro had tapped in from six yards after great work down the right from Mariano Ferreira to squirm between two defenders.

Gameiro ran on to a great through ball and forced a desperate last-ditch tackle from Kolo Toure, then Simon Mignolet performed an extraordinary save with his legs on totally unmarked Gameiro.

Sevilla were suddenly on top and after a splendid Roberto Vitolo passing move, Coke thumped in the finish from the edge of the box to put them in front.

The third Sevilla goal was a controversial one, as the linesman had his flag up, but the ball was passed to Coke by a Liverpool player and he was able to beat Mignolet one-on-one.

Jurgen Klopp’s men couldn’t find a way back and Inter transfer target Ever Banega took control of the midfield to give Sevilla a third consecutive Europa League trophy.
