Stephan El Shaarawy says he is “glad to be back in contention” for Roma after his cameo against Atalanta on Sunday.

El Shaarawy appeared for the final 15 minutes of Roma’s 1-0 win at Atalanta, and the winger is hoping to put a recent history of fitness problems behind him this season.

“It was one of my objectives to play in the first game,” he told Roma Radio.

“For me, it was very important because I started training with the team again on Tuesday.

“My physical condition isn’t optimal. I played half an hour for the Primavera, but I’m glad to be back in contention and that’s the important thing.

“The Coach asks me to make many cuts and go deep into them, I have those characteristics so it suits me.

“We have to listen to him because he’s a capable Coach. We gave a lot physically in the match.

“We didn’t have a spectacular game, but we brought the points home with physicality and heart.”
