Milan steamrolled Torino 4-1 with a pair of soft Olivier Giroud penalties, Christian Pulisic’s strike and a delicate Theo Hernandez dink.

The Rossoneri stuck with the same XI that won 2-0 in Bologna, giving Christian Pulisic, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Tijjani Reijnders their first taste of San Siro, with Ismael Bennacer injured and Yunus Musah available for the first time. Toro were still missing Koffi Djidji and Demba Seck after a disappointing goalless draw with Cagliari.

Olivier Giroud sprung the offside trap after a cleared corner to shoot just wide of the far post, while Mike Maignan ran a risk as he rushed out to close down Samuele Ricci. Torino lost Antonio Sanabria after just 21 minutes to a thigh problem, replaced by ex-Milan flop Pietro Pellegri.

Rafael Leao had a few strong runs, blasting over the bar, before the Rossoneri broke the deadlock with their new buys.

Pulisic started the move with a through ball for Ruben Loftus-Cheek, who pulled back from the right for Giroud, but it went beyond him to find Pulisic’s tap-in from six yards.

That did not last long, as Torino equalised moments later when Ricci’s shot took an odd bounce and turned into an assist for the Perr Schuurs volley from 10 yards.

There was controversy when VAR intervened to suggest an on-field review for Alessandro Buongiorno’s handling offence and the referee agreed it should be a penalty. This seemed extremely harsh, as Giroud ducked out of the way of the Leao cross and it struck Buongiorno’s hand, which was placed on the Frenchman’s back. Nonetheless, Giroud sent Vanja Milinkovic-Savic the wrong way to convert.

There were no doubts about Milan’s third goal before half-time, because Leao and Theo Hernandez combined twice down the left for the full-back’s delicate little dink from the tightest of angles.

There was an odd moment after the restart when some floodlights and the giant screen failed, so play continued and the sold-out crowd held up their phones to give it a concert atmosphere.

Leao burst down the left and pulled back for Tijjani Reijnders to steer it wide from nine yards. However, Schuurs trod on Leao’s ankle in that move and a penalty was awarded after the VAR review. Giroud converted again, despite changing the side of his finish.

Yunus Musah made his Milan debut and Pulisic stung Milinkovic-Savic’s gloves.
