Juventus twice came back from a goal down to beat Torino in a 4-2 Derby della Mole thriller that also saw Gleison Bremer score against his former club, the crossbar rattled twice and Paul Pogba’s season debut.
With the 15-point penalty, the Bianconeri were only one point above their city rivals going into the derby. Manuel Locatelli was suspended, with Arkadiusz Milik and Fabio Miretti injured, so 21-year-old Enzo Barrenechea was given his Serie A debut in midfield. Toro missed Nikola Vlasic, David Zima, Pietro Pellegri, Ronaldo Vieira and Valentino Lazaro injured.
Barely 90 seconds had passed when Torino took the shock lead, as a corner was flicked on by Alessandro Buongiorno, Yann Karamoh controlled with his chest from five yards and turned in.
Filip Kostic went down in the box under pressure, but had tripped over his own feet, but Juve equalised when Kostic’s cross went past both Dusan Vlahovic and Adrien Rabiot, finding Juan Cuadrado at the far post to smash the half-volley into the roof of the net with the aid of a deflection off Ricardo Rodriguez. It was the Colombian’s third goal in the Derby della Mole.
Vlahovic stung Vanja Milinkovic-Savic’s gloves, but Wojciech Szczesny flew for a sensational fingertip save to push the Sanabria header round the far top corner on a Rodriguez cross.
Toro were getting a lot of joy down the left and used it to restore their lead, as Ilic trapped the ball well and picked the perfect pass for Sanabria to toe-poke into the near bottom corner from seven yards, having got away from Gleison Bremer.
However, in first half stoppages Juve came back again for 2-2. Angel Di Maria’s corner found a bullet header from Danilo that thumped the inside of the upright and crossed over before Milinkovic-Savic could flap it away.
Vlahovic only grazed his head to a Kostic cross and Miranchuk curled wide, but Vlahovic should’ve scored when sent clear by an inspired Nicolò Fagioli pass, thumping the crossbar one-on-one with Milinkovic-Savic.
Cuadrado and Wilfried Singo drilled wide before Torino also rattled the frame of the goal with a stunning Karol Linetty curler that hit the bar.
The Allianz Juventus Stadium was on its feet at the 68th minute when Pogba made his first appearance of the season, seven months after the initial knee injury in pre-season training.
It was another substitute who proved decisive, as a corner was taken short for Federico Chiesa’s cross, finding Bremer for a free header to beat his former teammates.
Pogba saw a volley charged down by Singo from the edge of the area, but it was another set play that allowed them to extend their advantage. Kostic curled in a free kick, Danilo and Bremer flicked it on for Adrien Rabiot at the back post. There was a very long check for all the various potential offside positions, but it was given the all-clear.
