The Italian Football Federation chief attended the commemoration of footballers who fell during the First World War, and took the chance to discuss how the economic crisis is affecting the football industry in Italy today.

“In our country the sales of mineral water have plunged by 30 per cent”, he said, as reported by La Repubblica.

“People are drinking from the tap and it's the same with us in football. We no longer drink mineral water, but water from the tap.

“Our transfer market sees many swaps with no real economic movement.

“That's what marks the ability of our agents. Bringing home a horse from San Siro is better than a local donkey.

“The prevalence of foreigners has been a problem for a while. I've said it many times that we have to upgrade our youth teams.

“We must evaluate whether it's the case to make the presence of home-grown players mandatory in a team. Right now there are no such obligations.”

Tavecchio also reiterated that the friendly game between Italy and England, scheduled for March 31, will take place at the Juventus Stadium.

“I spoke not so long ago with the mayor of Turin, Piero Fassino. We are in a process of evaluation, but we'll certainly dispute it at the Juventus Stadium.”
