Luis Muriel’s free kick was immediately followed by Marco Asensio’s goal for 3-1 on the night, 4-1 on aggregate in the Champions League Round of 16.

“The objective was for us to go through with a good result and we achieved that,” Ramos told Movistar, as reported by Football Espana.

“We came out aiming to win the game, control the tempo and we did create more chances to score goals. This is the way forward.

“In the end, you do depend on how the other team approach it. We weren’t sure how they were going to press, but we quickly took control thanks to our system with three at the back.

“We knew Atalanta’s pace could be dangerous, but it went well and they didn’t really threaten us.”

The captain was asked about his contract situation, as negotiations continue.

“In the end, when you’ve been taking care of yourself for so many years, you reap what you sow. Nobody can be judged by their date of birth. We have to always try to perform at the highest level, and people must learn to value performance.

“I can’t say anything about the renewal. When there’s something to report, I’ll be the first to do so.”
