Both these teams were promoted from Serie B over the summer, albeit Benevento via the play-offs, and it was therefore a bottom of the table tussle.

“It was a very important game and the team put in a strong performance,” the Coach told Sky Sport Italia after a 2-1 triumph.

“We went behind, but the fact we were able to turn it around was a sign of great unity. Considering the results elsewhere, it was essential we get all three points today.”

The victory enabled the Spallini to catch Genoa on 14 points, getting back in front of Hellas Verona, who today earned a shock 3-0 win over Milan.

“SPAL have good organisation, though we are perhaps paying for the lack of experience at this level. We are growing, we won’t let go and fight for every ball. The club and fans are behind us, and that helps.”
