“It will be important to put on a great performance against a side that is fighting for their own safety. We are in an emergency situation, but I am convinced that those who will go on to the pitch will give it their all.”
SPAL swept Lecce aside 5-1 in the fourth round of the Coppa Italia, and Semplici hopes that win will instill confidence in his side.
“The result gave us an idea of our footballing identity, as well as growing confidence in some of our players. We are happy to have made it past the fourth round and face Milan in the last 16. We haven’t made it this far in the cup in many years.”
Semplici’s side has been decimated with injuries, particularly on the wings, missing Arkadiusz Reca, Gabriel Strefezza, Jacopo Sala, Federico Di Francesco, Mohamed Fares and Marco D’Alessandro.
“We are going through a tricky period, which began at the start of the year. We hope that with Christmas we will recover players, especially looking at the squad and how it’s shrunk.”
Brescia striker Mario Balotelli is in doubt for the match, but Semplici would rather focus on his own problems.
“I already have enough problems, that I leave to Eugenio Corini. Obviously, he is a player we must be wary of, but the same attention should be given to Alfredo Donnarumma and Ernesto Torregrossa.”
