Andrea Petagna’s penalty had temporarily drawn level, but a Mario Rui thunderbolt secured a 2-1 away result.

Napoli goalkeeper Meret was man of the match and a familiar face at the Stadio Paolo Mazza, having played here for two seasons in Serie B and A.

“I always knew he’d go on to have a great career. We signed him when he was in the Udinese youth team and wanted to keep him when we were promoted to Serie A,” Semplici told Sky Sport Italia.

“He denied us points both home and away this season, but I guess he deserves it.”

The Coach has not yet confirmed if he will remain on the SPAL bench next season after securing their safety.

“I will meet the club at the end of the season, we’ll sit around a table and decide together. It’s only natural to have the ambition to make another leap forward, so if that is with SPAL, we’ll have to listen to the club’s plans.

“It is right that a professional always targets improvement and growth, whether it is within his current club or in other situations that could present themselves.

“In any case, I have a contract with SPAL and don’t even want to talk about it. The club wants to improve year on year and I think first and foremost we want to ensure that we become a fixture in Serie A, which is the most important aspect for our budget and history.”

Before Semplici took them from Serie C to A, SPAL had not been in the top flight for 55 years.
