Riccardo Bigon insists that Napoli are on the verge of winning an alternative to the Scudetto.

Although the Azzurri sporting director admits that the club wanted to top the table, he maintains that finishing second would be no failure.

“We have to compliment Juventus” data-scaytid=”6″>Juventus, they’ve played at an incredible level and you have to applaud who does better than you,” Bigon told Radio Anch’Io Sport.

“We always thought about the title, we won’t deny that, but then Juventus underlined their strength, as well as their character.

“But we too will have got our Scudetto if we manage to keep hold of second place. We paid a hefty price for a drop in two or three games.

“It has been a positive season, though, one which has confirmed the success of our project and the consolidation of our team.”

With runners-up spot almost ensured given their seven point advantage over Milan, Bigon wants to maintain his side’s competitiveness for next season by keeping boss Walter Mazzarri and striker Edinson Cavani.

“I’ve known Mazzarri for about 10 years and he’s a great professional,” Bigon stated. “It is everyone’s desire that he continues with us.

“Edi is happy in Naples and at Napoli. He’s not on the transfer market, but we don’t make the rules. The intention is to improve the squad, not weaken it.”

The Uruguayan international has a €63m release clause inserted into his contract.
