Toto Schillaci can’t believe Italy failed to win the 1990 World Cup with that squad and sees Paulo Dybala as his heir in Serie A. “His style is quite similar to mine.”

“The World Cup is an extraordinary event and playing for your country is the dream of every player,” Schillaci told Sky Sport Italia.

“It was a fantastic tournament, we never lost and the only regret is that we didn’t win the trophy. We had such a great squad, it was just me who had come up a year before from Serie B, as everyone else was very experienced.

“I played just one season at Juventus, but earned my place with the utmost humility.”

Gianluca Vialli had been the first choice striker, replaced by Schillaci as the competition wore on, while Roberto Baggio also broke his way into the XI.

“I came on for my debut against Austria and was fortunate, as Vialli put in a spectacular cross, I found myself between two giant centre-backs, but the ball floated down right on to my head and I scored. I was happy, but the day after had already shaken that off. It was always fundamental for me to keep my feet on the ground.”

Schillaci was asked about the current crop of forwards and pointed towards his Juventus heir.

“I really like Dybala and have been following him since his days at Palermo. He has grown so much in his football career already. His style is quite similar to mine.”
