Paolo Scaroni underlined the importance of Milan’s new stadium to their competitiveness and he touched on the possible Investcorp takeover.

The Rossoneri are working hard to build a new stadium in Milan with intercity rivals Inter, both clubs keen to move from the current Stadio Giuseppe Meazza. Things have been progressing incredibly slowly and both clubs are now growing increasingly frustrated.

Speaking at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza for the Il Foglio event, Scaroni first discussed the importance of the work being carried out regarding a new stadium.

“I think like Agnelli. After 1,000 days, after giving up the volumes and accepting the requests of the municipality by making this additional step, I hope that it will stop being the project of Inter and Milan and become the project of Milan, without spending another 1,000 days and speeding up the process.

“Real Madrid earns €145 million a year, Milan €34 million: how can the fans think that we are competing with the same means when Real Madrid has five times more takings from the stadium? The urgency of the new stadium is absolute, as soon as we have the project approved we will start, whether it be in San Siro or elsewhere.

“Whoever owns Inter and Milan wants the same things. The issue of who owns Inter and Milan is irrelevant, the mayor thinks so too, if someone else thinks so I think it’s presumptuous.”

The Milan president then touched on the possible Investcorp takeover. The Bahraini investment fund are reportedly ready to pay €1.1 billion for the club and things are seemingly progressing positively, with a deal apparently close to being finalised.

“I don’t know, I don’t like to talk about things I’m not the subject of. I am not the subject of this affair, the subject is Elliott as well as other funds that may be interested in Milan, I am a spectator.”

Finally, Scaroni discussed the concern surrounding the location of the new stadium. Reports suggest that the two clubs are considering moving the stadium to the Sesto San Giovanni area of the city.

“When we talk about outside Milan, we talk about outside Milan relative, they are easily accessible places, not 50km from Milan. Every day that passes in this process, the plan B becomes more and more realistic.

“The whole San Siro project was born in total cohesion with Inter, there is no reason to change our attitude. Even our fans are divided by the pitch but they don’t have those bitter divisions that there are in other situations.

“There are nostalgic voices, even authoritative ones, but I always think that the world moves on. Everything changes, even the stadiums have to change, they knocked down Wembley, which is as iconic as the San Siro.”

  1. Real Madrid earns that much thanks to the 81K-seated stadium they have. You repeatedly insist on competitiveness on one hand, but on the the other hand you cut off your chances of being competitive by introducing a 60K stadium!
Anything smaller than San Siro is a step backwards. A shared stadium which will host two major European clubs shouldn’t be a 60K. Have some pride and dignity.
