Sassuolo have condemned racist insults aimed at Milan’s Kevin Constant, but defended the reputation of their fans.
Constant stormed off during last night’s Trofeo TIM tournament at the Mapei Stadium in Reggio Emilia when he heard alleged racist abuse from the crowd.
As nobody else seemed to hear the insults, the referee did not stop the game, but allowed Constant to be substituted.
“With reference to the incident that occurred during the Trofeo TIM, Sassuolo Calcio await the results of the investigation and fully condemn any racist expression,” read a statement.
“In any case, we also underline the extraordinary fair play of Sassuolo fans in general. Over the years and during the Trofeo TIM last night they supported their team with the utmost sporting values, never transcending into vulgar chants and ensuring visiting fans enjoyed their hospitality.”
Milan also released a statement that condemned racist abuse, but criticised Constant for taking the matter into his own hands.
There is a protocol put in place for Italian football matches when there is racist abuse, as only the referee has the authority to stop the game.
