Maurizio Sarri and Lazio director of sport Igli Tare continue to argue over whether or not a Champions League spot would be ‘a miracle’ for this team.

The controversy had been sparked by the coach saying in his press conference yesterday that he had joined a club where fourth place was the absolute top achievement in recent years and to repeat that with his current squad would be “a miracle.”

Speaking before today’s 2-0 win away to Sassuolo, Tare insisted he did “not agree with the miracle comment” and was confident they could fight it out to the end with the other contenders.

So when Sarri sat down with the media after the match at the Mapei Stadium, he went back over the situation.

“Tare can talk about his sensations, I have my own autonomous brain and can talk about my sensations,” replied Sarri.

“I simply stated this is how I see it. Lazio achieved at best fourth place, while eighth place was a flop, and anything in between was considered good.

“We are fifth and people are acting as if we’re doing badly. Something therefore doesn’t add up for me. I have the feeling some clubs are better equipped than we are, but if the lads play like they did today, we can have our say.

“I continue to maintain that fourth place would be going above and beyond any logical expectations.”

Part of that tension within the club is also with President Claudio Lotito and the fans, who seem to be behind Sarri in judging the squad not equipped to genuinely aim for a Champions League place.

  1. Sarri is correct! Lolito and Tare are delusional! Even in 2020 before the pandemic we had a genuine chance at the Scudetto! But guess what no investment and we faded out! We are 6th place side 4th is a miracle
