Cremonese have officially appointed Davide Ballardini as their new coach after sacking Massimiliano Alvini.

The former Genoa boss has put pen to paper until June 2024, with reports he will earn €500,000 for six months, €1m for the second season and receive a €500,000 bonus in case of securing Serie A safety.

Alvini was dismissed on Saturday afternoon, having made it to the midway stage of the season without managing a single victory or even being in a leading situation for a minute of football.

Ballardini has an uphill struggle ahead of him, as Cremonese are bottom of the Serie A table with just seven points from 18 rounds.

He will be assisted by Carlo Regno, Francesco Bertini, Roberto Beni, Nicola Tarroni and Andrea Sardini.

The highlight of Ballardini’s coaching career is winning the Italian Supercup with Lazio in 2009, but he is most famous for the many returns to Genoa.
