New Milan signing Riccardo Saponara is on the mend even if he admits he’s still being troubled by a groin problem.

The Italian Under-21 international moved to San Siro in the summer from Empoli, but he’s been hampered by injury.

“I still can’t train at 100 per cent,” he told Milan Channel. “But the pain is slowly disappearing and I’m optimistic that I can return to full fitness quickly.

“I’ll need some time though having missed pre-season training.”

Although he’s had his struggles on the pitch at Milanello, he’s happy with his new life off it following his transfer.

“Milan is different to Empoli, but I’m fitting in well and my teammates are helping with that,” he added.

“I immediately felt a part of the team even if I’ve only played for half an hour of a match and a few training sessions.”

Saponara is a versatile attacker, but one who prefers to play as a trequartista behind two strikers – a role which Kaka also fills.

“Kaka is a great player who has given so much to Milan and has a lot more to give,” the 21-year-old continued.

“It’s emotional playing with him as he was my hero when I was a kid. I’m watching him closely. I really want to learn as much as I can.”
