Santos President Jose Carlos Peres confirms they will only take Gabriel ‘Gabigol’ Barbosa back if Inter pay his wages. “We don’t want to spend anything.”

The striker was bought from Santos in August 2016 for €29.5m, but never made a Serie A start and is now struggling for playing time during his loan spell at Benfica too.

A return to Brazil and his hometown club is an option, but one that offers precious few incentives for the Nerazzurri.

“The issue is an economic one, because we don’t want to pay anything. We have already ruled out the possibility of paying half his salary,” said the Santos chief in a Press conference.

“What we can guarantee to Inter is that we’ll take on their reserve player who has lost value. They have to pay, because we are gaining nothing from this.

“Gabigol certainly won’t remain at Santos after this and all we’ll get out of it is on the field, where he is already an idol to the fans. I won’t go beyond that, because I won’t damage Santos finances for him or any other player.”
