Roma were showing an interest in Davide Santon before the Italian Under-21 international joined Newcastle in the summer.

“Yes, Roma were interested,” the defender told TMW. “There was talk about it, but in the end nothing concrete came of it.

“Therefore Newcastle arrived. Initially they wanted me on loan, but then they decided to sign me outright with Inter’s agreement.”

The 21-year-old, formerly a wide midfielder, moved to Inter’s youth ranks in 2005 after six years at Ravenna.

He broke into the Nerazzurri side while Jose Mourinho was in charge of the team, but was sold for around £5m in the summer after spending six months of last season on loan at Cesena.
