Inter full-back Davide Santon has called for ‘patience’ as Roberto Mancini seeks to rebuild the side.

The Nerazzurri are languishing in 10th place in Serie A after Sunday’s draw in the Milan derby, but Santon sees reason for optimism

“We’re still in a phase of evolution,” the former Newcastle United man explained in an interview with SportMediaset.

“A lot of players have arrived, the team has totally changed compared to the Inter I knew four years ago. We’re trying to forge a new identity, and the Coach is working on that.

“We’ve got so many good players like [Nemanja] Vidic who played for many years in a great club, but they need time to adapt, it’s not easy.

“The same goes for [Xherdan] Shaqiri and [Marcelo] Brozovic for example. It takes a bit of time, we need patience.

“The Coach is a good person, who talks so much to the players and has won things everywhere he’s been.

“Europe is a long way away, but there are still a lot of games to go until the end of the season, we have to try and win as many games as possible to improve the mentality of this team.”

Santon was also asked about Yaya Toure, who is believed to be the club’s number one transfer target this summer.

“I’ve played against him, and when they [Manchester City] won the League, he scored twice at St James’ Park.

“He’s very strong, he’s fantastic, he can run, he has quality and he’s the kind of player who can decide a game by himself.”
