After the game, the entire squad stopped the team bus in front of the hospital and sang to their Coach, who leaned out the window of the room where he is undergoing chemotherapy.

“His illness really hit us hard and there is such a strong bond between us and the Coach,” Sansone told Sky Sport Italia.

“We really are a united team and that’s wonderful to feel so connected. We wanted to give him a nice surprise on the way home from the game and paid him a visit.”

Mihajlovic was diagnosed with leukaemia in July and has already undergone one course of chemotherapy, but was given permission to sit on the bench for the first two games of the season.

Due to the timing of the latest treatment, it is not possible for him to leave the hospital at the moment, but he does keep up to date by videolink and even gives half-time team talks.

“We love the Coach because he’s so frank, so clear, and we like that honesty. We fight not for safety or Europe, but for our Mister, Mihajlovic.

“He was definitely not pleased with our first half performance in Brescia, so we had to make up for it.”
