Sampdoria Vice-President Edoardo Garrone wrote an open letter to fans ahead of the Genoa derby. “The team needs confidence.”

The Blucerchiati are in crisis after a record seven consecutive defeats and it’s believed failure in Sunday night’s Derby della Lanterna would see Coach Ciro Ferrara sacked.

Fans staged a protest at the training ground on Wednesday, hurling smoke bombs and fireworks while chanting insults.

“We are going through a difficult and delicate period. That is clear for all to see,” wrote Garrone in an open letter.

“We know that and are not hiding from it. We are coming off seven consecutive defeats and never more than now does the team need confidence, a push and to feel supported down the right path – that of victory.

“The derby is a game that does not need presentation, as we all know what it means to those in our city. Today more than ever this match has a fundamental importance for morale and the table.

“The tension is rising and the prize at stake is particularly precious. I expect to see a team with grit, the utmost effort and determination. I want a sporting battle, but a fair one.

“In the stands and outside the stadium I want the passion of our extraordinary fans to drag our lads forward in the full respect of the values and rules of this sport.

“I am convinced that all Sampdoriani will as ever prove themselves to be an extra weapon and, whatever the result on the field, will show how unique they are in terms of their civility, politeness and fairness towards their own team and their opponents.”
