“Samp must always look forward, never backward. We have a quarter of the season to go, so we’ll fight for third place, because if we can fight to the end for a Champions League place then even if we miss we’ll be in the Europa League.

“I’m convinced that my lads won’t disappoint, we respect everyone, but we fear no-one. On a level playing field Sampdoria can compete with anyone.

“This Samp doesn’t have a Champions League squad, but our guts, organisation and mentality are Champions League level.

“It’s almost impossible, but we have to start from that desire to succeed. We’ve earned every point we’ve got on the pitch, I don’t know where we’ll finish but I know we’ll fight to the end.

“We won’t have any regrets, because we’ll know we gave everything and if someone is better than us then we’ll take our hats off to them.”

Mihajlovic was sacked by the Viola in November 2011, but the former defender says he bears no grudges.

“I don’t know how I’ll be welcomed in Florence tomorrow, but I gave everything there.

“I thank [owner Andrea] Della Valle, it was a particular situation and it didn’t work out. Fiorentina are a great club, they play good football and I’m happy for my friend [Viola Coach] Vincenzo [Montella].”
