Sampdoria have managed to avoid a Serie A points penalty, as it’s reported today they will pay the outstanding October and November 2022 wages to players and staff, who agreed to forego December.

The club had been on the verge of missing the deadline for unpaid salaries stretching back to last year, as patron Massimo Ferrero assured he could find the money to cover these debts.

It seems he was partially successful, as news agency Ansa reports that Sampdoria will today be able to pay the outstanding October and November 2022 wages.

This is only partial, because the club managed to negotiate a deal with the players and staff to forego a month’s salary that was set for December 2022.

It is still not the end of the danger for the Blucerchiati, as another €11m needs to be found by May 16 to pay the wages from January, February and March 2023.

Ferrero has been criticised by the current board of directors for refusing to even discuss a sale to American fund Merlyn Partners.

He was forced to step down as President after his arrest for fraudulent bankruptcy of his other businesses, but remains the club owner.
