The South Americans looked on course to cruise to victory after going 2-0 up inside the opening 15 minutes, but the Aussies fought back and it needed an injury time goal from Jean Beausejour to make the game safe.

“The important thing was to win in order to have aspirations,” Sampaoli told the media after the 3-1 win. “The team were worn down so it was important to get the result.

“We finished the match in complicated fashion, Chile had everything to get a more comfortable result.”

Sampaoli acknowledged his team face a difficult task in their next game, a crucial match with world champions Spain who were routed by Holland tonight.

“Spain are the world champions, they had a blow today but they are one of the best teams in the world.”
