The COVID-19 outbreak at Salernitana is getting worse, as another two players tested positive today, taking the total to six.

A statement released by the club this afternoon confirmed two more of their squad members have now contracted the virus.

The total of players, not counting members of staff, who are currently positive now stands at six.

Salernitana already saw their last Serie A game of 2021 called off, as the local authorities barred them from travelling to Udine for the fixture against Udinese.

It remains to be seen if Salernitana will be allowed to play in Serie A again this season, because the deadline for the club’s sale is December 31.

The deadline was repeatedly postponed in order to give owner Claudio Lotito, who also runs top flight club Lazio, the opportunity to find a buyer.

The rules prohibit one person or company from owning two clubs in the same division, something Salernitana and Lotito knew from their promotion in May.

FIGC President Gabriele Gravina warned there will not be another delay, so if Salernitana don’t find a new owner by December 31, the club will be excluded from the rest of the Serie A season.

All their results so far will be scrubbed from the register.
