Salernitana and Juventus will pay tribute to Andrea Fortunato before tonight’s Serie A match, remembering the player who died at the age of 23 from leukaemia.

It kicks off at the Stadio Arechi at 19.45 GMT.

Born in Salerno, Fortunato was a left-back with one senior Italy cap to his name, earned in September 1993.

He played for Como, Pisa, Genoa and joined Juventus in the summer of 1993.

However, he was diagnosed with leukaemia in May 1994 after complaining of fatigue and underwent treatment.

This left him immunosuppressed and he died on April 25, 1995 after contracting pneumonia, aged just 23.

In a cruel twist of fate, one of the mourners who spoke at his funeral in Salerno was his then Juventus teammate Gianluca Vialli, who lost his own fight with cancer last month.

Before tonight’s game, representatives of the two clubs will exchange jerseys with Fortunato’s name and number 3.

Members of the Juventus Club Andrea Fortunato from Salerno will also be present in the stadium.
