Mohamed Salah is “happy” at Roma, and explains how close he came to joining Liverpool.

The winger controversially moved to the Giallorossi this summer, after deciding not to remain with Fiorentina, and spoke to MBC about scoring against the Viola.

“It was a nice goal,” Salah recalled.

“The Fiorentina fans were already angry with me before I scored because I went to Roma in August.

“I’m happy here with the Giallorossi, I feel at ease with my teammates and I like the city.”

Salah is on loan from Chelsea, but reveals he could have been a Liverpool player were it not for an intervention by Jose Mourinho.

“Liverpool wanted me for a number of months, they opened talks in October 2013. The negotiations were long, Basel rejected more than one offer because they thought they were below my real value.

“I was waiting to go to Liverpool, I wanted to go because it was a club I really liked. Then I received a phone call directly from Jose Mourinho and everything changed.

“He explained the situation, and said that I was a good player and Chelsea needed me. That was one of the main reasons why I didn’t go to Liverpool and chose Chelsea instead.

“My experience in England helped me a lot, it formed character and helped me to grow as a player.

“Joining Basel? It was one of the most important decisions of my life. It was the best decision I could have made, because it was my way into European football.

“In Switzerland the game is less difficult than the English or Italian one. In England the football is rougher, there are some pitches where hardly any teams go and win.

“In Italy it’s more tactical, which means that every team has a chance wherever they go.”
