Director Walter Sabatini has been in England recently and the Italian sports paper suggests he met with Saints directors yesterday.

It is reported the Giallorossi agreed to take Uruguayan midfielder Ramirez in exchange for one of the payment instalments still owed for the £13.2m Dani Osvaldo transfer.

Roma cannot welcome another non-EU player into their ranks this season due to the Serie A limitations, so he’d have to be sent out on loan first.

Bologna would be willing to bring Ramirez back for six months, as he only left the Stadio Dall’Ara for Southampton in August 2012 for £13.3m (€15.2m).

“Gaston certainly wants to come back to Italy,” agent Pablo Betancourt told Calciomercato.com.

“There are two Italian clus who want him, but the lad also has offers from abroad, as Roberto Mancini’s Galatasaray and Crystal Palace are interested.

“Gaston was very close to Nicola Cortese, so his resignation as director only increased the desire to move elsewhere, hopefully in Italy.”
