Alexis Saelemaekers says he would have stayed at Milan if Paolo Maldini had not left the Rossoneri.

Bologna unveiled the Belgian winger at a press conference on Wednesday. He has joined the Rossoblu on loan with an option to buy.

Saelemaekers left Milan after seeing the Rossoneri make several new signings in attack over the summer, especially Christian Pulisic, Samuel Chukwueze and Noah Okafor, who can all play on the right wing.

“I feel fine even if I suffered a slight ankle injury during my first training session. I am working to be available against Hellas Verona,” said Saelemaekers.

“As for Milan, there was no idea I would leave before Maldini’s departure. However, there were a few changes when he went and I decided to look for another opportunity. I am happy to be here today.

“I think Milan fans have appreciated that I always gave everything for the shirt,” continued the Belgian.

“Thiago Motta called me after a chat with my agent. I’ve never met a coach like him. I immediately felt the desire to come here. I also felt trust from the director. Motta spoke about trust and ambition, saying we could do a lot together.”

Where does he expect to play under the ex-Italy international?

“We have also spoken about the attacking midfielder role because the coach feels I have the quality to play there. Of course, I can play on the right wing too. I had an offer from Spain, but I felt the trust of the Rossoblu, so I decided to come here.”
