Arrigo Sacchi says he is surprised by claims he was the presumed target of Milan boss Massimiliano Allegri’s outburst this week.

The tactician criticised the media in the aftermath of their Champions League win over PSV for their pre-game coverage of him and his side.

Allegri didn’t specifically target any particular journalist or pundit, but it has been suggested that Sacchi – a former Diavolo tactician – was one of the people he was most annoyed with.

“I have nothing against Allegri, for whom I have great respect,” Sacchi told the Corriere dello Sport. “He is a great Coach and a great person.

“I was also one of the first to speak well about him with regards to how he has worked at Milan. I therefore fall from the clouds when I hear that I was the one he was aiming his criticism at.

“I don’t understand the interpretations of certain situations. I repeat – I consider Allegri to be an excellent Coach and an excellent guy.”

Allegri is now in his fourth season at San Siro following a spell in Serie A with Cagliari. He has finished first, second and third in the top flight since his arrival.
