Roma director Walter Sabatini called this “a special day” as Kevin Strootman makes his first start in nine months.

The Dutchman’s last start was in the ill-fated match with Napoli on March 9, when he ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his knee, but he’s in the line-up today against Sassuolo.

“It is a special day for us, for him and for all the Roma fans,” Sabatini told Sky Sport Italia.

“We are happy for him, as he made so many sacrifices to reach this point. Now he will begin again with all his quality and can really help us out this season.

“Strootman has always been treated as a champion by the fans, even when we could only see him playing in our minds. Now we get to see him for real.”

Sabatini was also asked about Alessandro Florenzi’s contract renewal situation.

“His contract has never been up for debate. We are talking with his agent and it won’t be a problem to resolve this.”
