Simone Inzaghi admits Lazio dropped two points in Benevento against his brother Pippo. ‘You can’t go into the break 1-1 after that performance.’

Ciro Immobile’s opener was a spectacular volley and the Aquile dominated the opening 44 minutes, but were caught out by Pasquale Schiattarella on a corner.

“The lads tried everything to win, we shouldn’t have conceded that goal and we should’ve scored another in the first half,” the coach told DAZN of the draw.

“After the break, we didn’t repeat the intensity level and Benevento improved, so it was more even. The regrets are the first half, but Benevento caused us a lot of problems.

“They are a team in good shape, well-organised and solid, so we needed patience. I thought our first half was very good, but maybe because of fatigue, both physical and psychological, we didn’t make it count. You can’t go into the break on 1-1 after that performance.

“It was difficult to keep that level going, we did create some chances after the break too, but we didn’t make that pressure count.”

Benevento also threatened to win late on with a series of counter-attacks, forcing Pepe Reina saves.

“I thought Luis Alberto had a great game. Let’s not forget he hadn’t played since Bruges, he only had 30 minutes of training yesterday, so I had to ask him to grit his teeth. I honestly didn’t expect him to last 80 minutes, as he was completely out of action for six days.

“We lost Lucas Leiva, Francesco Acerbi and Mohamed Fares to muscular problems after the Verona game on Saturday, in a day and a half had to travel to Benevento. The fixture list is incredible, we’re always at the limit.

“I continue to believe this team has a lot of potential, but we are inevitably drained playing every three days.”
